OG SINCE 2014
As lifelong racers, cyclists, explorers, and adventurers, we’re driven to break free from the 9-to-5 grind. We return to the essentials, leaving behind work, traffic, screens, and stress. On our bikes, we find freedom and escape it all.
In October 2013, we stumbled upon a gravel gem in Castell, Texas. Gravel cycling was just taking root, and we were young, restless, and hungry for the next challenge. It didn’t take long to realize this was no ordinary ride. The breathtaking views, rugged route, charming town, and vibrant energy were unlike anything we’d ever encountered. Fueled by this newfound passion for gravel and the allure of the Texas Hill Country, the Castell Grind was born that day—a true grassroots gravel event.
Countless miles have rolled by since our tires first carved paths through Castell’s rugged terrain. The sport of gravel cycling has surged, progress has reshaped the landscape, and change is inevitable. Yet, our unwavering passion for Castell, its iconic route, and the grassroots spirit of the Castell Grind endures, as steadfast as ever.
We hope your Castell Grind experience ignites a passion to push your limits, embrace adventure, discover new horizons, break free from routine, forge lasting friendships, and keep pedaling forward.
Yours in gravel,
Mike, Debbie and Janie
The Castell Grind Crew
Established in 2014, the Castell Grind is an iconic annual gravel cycling event set in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. This original gravel (OG) ride offers three counterclockwise routes - the Full Grind (62 miles), Three-Quarter Grind (45 miles), and Half Grind (31 miles) - all starting and ending in Castell. Cyclists tackle remote gravel and mixed-surface roads, immersed in epic views, striking rock formations, low-water crossings, wildlife, cattle guards, and minimal traffic. The challenging terrain delivers adventure and bragging rights in equal measure. With a cult-like following, the Castell Grind caps registration at 550 riders and typically sells out in under an hour when it opens annually on November 1st at noon.
Since its inception in 2014, the Castell Grind has transformed the quaint town of Castell into a renowned destination on the gravel cycling map. Thousands of cyclists have pedaled countless miles along its remote, scenic roads, drawn by the allure of this iconic locale. As cycle tourism, bikepacking, and the sport of gravel cycling continue to surge, Castell has solidified its status as a year-round mecca for gravel adventures, where cycling dreams are brought to life.
At the crossroads of past and present, the Castell General Store stands as the vibrant heart of Castell, offering weary cyclists an oasis of hearty food, refreshing drinks, and a window into rural Texas heritage. While Castell warmly welcomes riders, its remote roads offer few amenities, so plan wisely and prepare accordingly. Camping and short-term rentals are available but limited, so book early. Always respect these rural routes and adhere to Leave No Trace principles. The Castell Grind course, set on public roads, is open for pre-riding year-round, inviting adventurers to experience its timeless challenge.
